Dead Reckoning (DR) is a navigation method that allows you to determine the future position of a vessel based on its current position, course, speed, and time underway. In the Dead Reckoning section, we will explore how to use the functions and tools of the ECDIS program to perform this method. You will learn how to manually adjust the vessel's course, speed, and position to accurately predict its movement and avoid navigational hazards.

1
Press COG/HDG and swipe up/down to adjust a HDG value, left/right to adjust COG value.
The use of the Dead Reckoning (DR) function allows a vessel to track its estimated position based on Course Over Ground (COG) and Heading (HDG) values, even when GPS data might be unavailable or unreliable. Manually adjusting the COG and HDG values enables the operator to more accurately estimate the vessel's current position and plot a course while accounting for possible deviations, such as current, wind, or instrument errors.

Press POS and swipe up/down/left/right to adjust a position.
Manually adjusting the position using the Dead Reckoning (DR) function allows the operator to correct the vessel's current location on the chart when GPS data may be unreliable or unavailable. This is especially useful for accurately tracking the vessel's position during navigation in challenging conditions, such as dense fog or near the shoreline, where visual landmarks may be limited.

Press ROT/SOG and swipe up/down to adjust a SOG value, left/right to adjust ROT value.
Manually adjusting the Speed Over Ground (SOG) and Rate of Turn (ROT) values using the Dead Reckoning (DR) function allows the operator to accurately simulate the vessel's movement. This is especially important when maneuvering in challenging navigation conditions or when precise data from navigation instruments is unavailable. Such adjustments help in predicting the vessel's future position and avoiding potential hazards.
